Security Matters: I've Seen the Future, and It Has a Kill Switch

Security Matters: I've Seen the Future, and It Has a Kill Switch:

"It used to be that just the entertainment industries wanted to control your computers -- and televisions and iPods and everything else -- to ensure that you didn't violate any copyright rules. But now everyone else wants to get their hooks into your gear.

OnStar will soon include the ability for the police to shut off your engine remotely. Buses are getting the same capability, in case terrorists want to re-enact the movie Speed. The Pentagon wants a kill switch installed on airplanes, and is worried about potential enemies installing kill switches on their own equipment.

Microsoft is doing some of the most creative thinking along these lines, with something it's calling 'Digital Manners Policies.' According to its patent application, DMP-enabled devices would accept broadcast 'orders' limiting capabilities. Cellphones could be remotely set to vibrate mode in restaurants and concert halls, and be turned off on airplanes and in hospitals. Cameras could be prohibited from taking pictures in locker rooms and museums, and recording equipment could be disabled in theaters. Professors finally could prevent students from texting one another during class."

Boeing Dreamliner Production Delays

Boeing Dreamliner Production Delays :

"The wings are from Japan. The fuselage is from Italy. The engines are manufactured in Britain (though some are also produced in the United States). More than any plane in history, Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner—the first commercial jet constructed largely from superlight, carbon-fiber composites rather than aluminum—is being built by a global network of suppliers and partners. So far, Boeing has taken orders for 892 Dreamliners, worth more than $145 billion, from some 50 airlines. But the outsourcing, along with manufacturing problems, has led to repeated delays. Result? The Dreamliner will not make its appearance until late 2009, more than a year behind schedule, and carriers including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Qantas are asking for compensation. View an interactive feature to see what went wrong."

Why the Conchords really took flight

Why the Conchords really took flight:

"They're New Zealand's hottest international artists, have been nominated for an Emmy - and are now worth millions of dollars.

But it appears a relatively paltry sum of $300,000 was the real reason TVNZ turned down comedy duo Flight of the Conchords four years ago.

That much-criticised decision by TVNZ's commissioners led the Conchords, Wellingtonians Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, to seek fame, fortune and their own show overseas."

2008-2009 Whale Defense Campaign: Operation Musashi

2008-2009 Whale Defense Campaign: Operation Musashi:

"While in Santiago, Chile for the 60th Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), Sea Shepherd Conservation Society officially announced plans to return to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary to once again oppose illegal Japanese whaling activities. Sea Shepherd is represented at the IWC by Captain Paul Watson, Founder and President of Sea Shepherd, and the Honourable Ian Campbell, former Minister of the Environment for Australia and current member of Sea Shepherd's international Advisory Board.

This year's campaign, Sea Shepherd's fifth campaign to Antarctic waters, will be called Operation Musashi in reference to the legendary Japanese strategist, Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi's Book of Five Rings included the approach of the Twofold Way of Pen and Sword. Sea Shepherd's goal is to send two fast ships to the Southern Ocean with the purpose of continuously keeping the Japanese whaling fleet on the run."
